Tip Day Thursday – iOS 9 Content Blockers

I know, you’re like what does an iOS post have to do with Disney? Well directly, not a thing! However, many like myself have come to suf the web off mobile devices and Safari for iOS is the majority of the market. So I’m getting my geek hat on this week. I do apologize that it’s actually Friday, but this week was a bit chaotic. Yes, there are tons of Android based phones and tablets running anything from Chome to Dolphin to Firefox and a lot more. Several of which have had ad blocking for a while. In fact you could have had it on iOS for a while if you jailbreaked the device. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is multi-fauceted: First, a major company basically endorsed your right to have a better web experience (there are other reasons for them). Second, in the long term it may change how you get your Disney (and other) content. Let me say, Stitch’s Home does not advertise at all, I have no stake in it whether you use them or not. It’s upto you if you do, though after some background I’ll cover a few of the hot ones that have come out.

My Disney Experience App Update

The My Disney Experience App got an update allowing you to see the previews of your PhotoPass pics. You can also purchase MemoryMaker and then you can download your pics straight to your phone or tablet. With it you can also share right from your mobile device. This was a big holdup for the app in the PhotoPass area, since Disney websites can be hit or miss on working correctly from CSS or Javascript hiccups. Plus loading up the main PhotoPass website loads in a bunch of stuff to edit, view, etc that is a lot of things to try to make a mobile browser handle with possibly a less than ideal connection.

Shop Disney Parks App

Recently Disney launched a brand new app on iOS and Android called Shop Disney Parks. You are liable to be thinking, wait don’t they already have a shoppping app? Yes they do for the Disney Store, which does have a section for park items, just not the entire selection. And yes you can usually call disney up and order something over the phone if they have it and you know what it is. This new app however gives you what’s in the parks, where it’s at in the parks, and lets you shop the entire selection either at the Parks or from the comfort of your own home right on your smartphone or tablet.

Disneyland Has A New App

Disneyland just got a new offiial app for Android and iOS. What it boils down to is a stripped down version of the My Disney Experience App for Walt Disneyworld, it gets several pluses from it but currently is leaving out many of the benefits of MyMagic+. Granted, I’m sure several of you out there will be thrilled that it is. But anyway, what you’re getting is an App that will give you attraction wait times and a description of the attraction, show times, let you buy park tickets, use an interactive map with: dining locations, PhotoPass locations, restroom locations, meet and greet locations, and shopping locations. You can also map your passes to the app and use your phone to get into Disneyland and California Adventure. To conincide with this, regular tickets will be moving to RFID versions similar to what Walt Disney World has, though there is no immediate plans to port over the MagicBands.

Disney Releases Their Own IOS GIF and Keyboard App

While the ability to load your own keyboard app has been out for awhile on IOS, Disney has just released their own. Requires IOS 8.2 or higher, Disney GIF, released featuring over 200 GIFs with more on the way. Basically the app is a keyboard extension allowing you to send these GIFs, and future ones, out on text messages, emails, etc. While Disney has offering of these on other third-party keyboard extensions, this is the first Disney exclusive app. It features Frozen, Star Wars, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, and more. The catch is right now each category feels a bit limited, for instance Star Wars only has 12 items. Similar to the Disney Side app, Disney needs to pump more options into the app to make it feel complete, but if they do this will become a great resource for those that love to use Emoticons and want to use Disney ones. The app will offer in-app purchases for premium packs, currently a couple from Frozen. You can browse by Emoticon, Disney Film/Show, or what’s trending. The app itself is free and available on iTunes.
