Disney has announced that Rob Marshall (Into The Woods) will be working with producers John Deluca and Marc Platt to bring a new Mary Poppins Musical to the big screen. Set 20 years after the original Mary Poppins back in London during the depression era. The original film was largely based on P.L. Travers' first book of the series and this film will take from the remaining seven books. However, that said it not currently being set as your typical sequal, though it is to continue with Mary and the Banks family. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) will be doing the music and the script will be written by David Magee (Life of Pi and Finding Neverland). Currently no word on casting, though the actress that gets to be Mary will have some big shoes to fill to step into the role after Julie Andrews.
Mary Poppins has maintained it's popularity for decades, still getting vault releases, aired on TV along, and the smash hit broadway production. Along with that, it was revisited from the real life side of the movie in Saving Mr. Banks. I expect this will become one of the more anticipated releases on Disney's schedule. However, I must say I'm not sold on who they have directing as I didn't care for Into The Woods. It seemed to weird and jumbled mess to me. I'm also not convinced about David Magee as Life of Pi was one of the strangest movies I ever saw. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised, I'd really hate for it to crash and burn. Note: To re-emphasis this is not the often “released” bit where supposedly Tim Burton is making it that pops up every so often, though personally I'd rather him do it than Rob Marshall. I'm sure some of you loved Into The Woods, but I really didn't care for it.
